Maps and Networks Brainstorm #2

In my 1:1 meeting with Jeremiah, he asked me what i enjoyed doing. I talked to him about my interest in set design and architecture, and about how i've been trying to experiment with it more recently.

I told him that, ideally, i'd like to build something for the exhibition; incorporate some digital media into it as well. This could be through projection, sound design etc... He said that this would be very possible and it depends what medium i'd want to work with; ceramic, clay, glass, wood etc... However, he did mention that if the exhibition wouldn't be able to happen physically because of another national lockdown, we'd need to take it online. This would need a lot of thought and would also mean that i'd have to think of an alternative to building a 3 dimensional structure. This is a shame, as i feel like constructing something would be pushing me out of my comfort zone, however, the challenge of coming up with different and new ways to present an artwork will be exciting and will test me in its own way.

Thinking about what i could build in relation to the brief:

I want to focus on the 'networks' side of the project rather than the 'maps' side.

Family trees; interesting to go back through time and see how it all connects.

Idea to build something rather like a dolls house; easy to open and peer into all the different rooms. Each room could represent a different living space of each person in the family tree. Some rooms will be richer than others and some will be older than others. I wouldn't use my own family tree. I was thinking about creating a fictional one; this way i can let my imagination run wild and allow myself to create some really interesting rooms in this building. I'd also create a separate little soundscape for each room. This would give a sense of what kind of living situation each of these families/people had.

Jeremiah talked more about creating your own narratives, if you're interested in writing. I really like the idea of creating your own little world; creating your own rules. I touched upon the idea of creating a fictional family tree but i feel like it would be more of a challenge to come up with a more complex story and that's something i'd really like to try and push myself to do.

To generate more ideas i took a series of photographs during a 2 hour car journey from Whitstable (my home town) to Farnham (I went home for a week). They were just very quick and taken on my phone. The windscreen was quite dirty but this added a rather old, film-like filter to each photo, which i liked. The fact that they were taken very quickly made me appreciate this little exercise more as i was simply taking pictures of things that immediately caught my eye; i didn't have time to overthink the shot. I was simply mapping out the network of my journey for what it was. It was interesting to see how two completely different towns become connected through a collection of quick images:

Questions to ask myself:

-Do i want to create a photographic series?
-Do i want to create a photographic series with sound to accompany? So it's more of a sensory and visual narrative.
-Do i want to construct something and involve media too? For example, I could construct a miniature set and have projections on it? If i did this, what medium would i work in? Ceramic, wood, clay, card, plastic etc...?
-Do i want to create a short film? If so, live action or animation? Mixed media?
-Do i want to create something interactive or stick to something people just view?
-How would i create something for an online exhibition?
