Collage inspirations
'This is how we walk on the moon'- Jose Gonzalez
I love how you can easily tell that this album cover had been collaged. The layers aren't perfect, they're a bit scruffy around the edges and each mountain is a different shade of blue/green. I really like this because it gives the image character. The rough edges create a texture and the patterns all compliment one another. The perfect circle in the middle just brings the jagged nature of the mountains out more. It's aesthetic is very dream-like which is what i'm aiming for.
'Tearing me up'- Bob Moses
This album cover really caught my attention because of it's simplicity. The curve created through the connection of these two characters faces is perfect. It speaks for the whole image and gives it movement. I love how he didn't feel the need to fill the blank space with anything else. It's easy to over-complicate things so, i picked this image as a reminder not to do so.
'1998'- Chet Faker
I like how this image merges two parts of the body together in a very unconventional way. It's out of the ordinary and therefore, like something from a dream- something that the mind would subconsciously construct.
'Telluric'- Matt Corby
This is one of my favourite collages and it reminds me most of the kind of patterns you'd find on a Tarot card. This is because, it's constructed of very natural objects and laid out in such a way that looks like a tarot card- with the title at the bottom and the variety of colours/patterns. Also, as this is a portrait project, looking at this collage gives me ideas of how i can manipulate the idea of a portrait. In this album cover, we only see feet from two sides of the frame. However, we know that a person is still present so maybe all i need to make a portrait is someones feet or eyes, for example- not necessarily the entire person? I just really like how this looks and it's also more dream-like as it seems as though you're looking into this hole from the person on the right's perspective.

The Tarot is a deck of 78 cards that represent universal symbols or archetypes. The images in the Tarot speak to people regardless of their age, gender or religious beliefs. Tarot cards are powerful and sacred. It's almost like the collective experience of humanity illustrated in 78 images. I noticed that the Tarot cards all follow the same ethereal, religious themes. Eye's are a very prominent and recurring feature in Tarot cards. They represent the ability to see all and reference a higher power. Eye's are also the window to the soul so i think it would be interesting to include eye's in my collages. The four main collective of objects found in Tarot cards are swords, wands, cups and pentacles. Each card has a different quantity on each. For this project however, i want to try and stray away from completely trying to replicate the aesthetic of a tarot card. I want them to be original and i want to explore different way to present them. I don't want to manipulate them to the point where they wouldn't be recognised as tarot cards, i just want to put my own spin on each and modernise them so that i can also link them to dreams. My series is not religious. I'm simply using Tarot cards as a platform to physicalise dreams. I will still include the classic roman numerals at the top of the cards and have the name of each card at the bottom. Patterns used in stain glass windows are very similar to those on Tarot cards. The design is extremely intricate and colourful. There are very prominent and cutting shapes that dominate the image. Each pattern is very deliberate but, to showcase the random nature of dreams, i want my cards to be less intricate and hold random but interesting shapes and objects. I want the audience to be a bit confused by what they're looking at, because then that will encompass what a dream is- confusing, unpredictable and thought provoking.
