Portraits- 'Juxtaposition' Series
Colour In Unexpected Places
My inspiration for this project was the juxtaposition found in Steven Spielberg's 'Schindler's List', specifically, The girl in the red coat. The placement of colour in a not so colourful situation was so poignant for that time and resonated with audiences simply because of that juxtaposition. The red coat was meant to symbolise the innocence within a time of destruction and discrimination. It also symbolised however, the the red blood of Jews sacrificed during the holocaust. This girl bounds a thin divide between the morbid and the hopeful which is a very strong juxtaposition to place within a film. Other than the appearance of the red coat, the film is shot primarily in black and white, enforcing even more so, that loss of hope. I thought i'd give this theme a go and drain my photo's of their original colour to then instead replace with , a sense of a colour to emphasise a certain aspect of that image.
