SPACES
An exploration of continuity and transitions through time in film

Following on from my ideas of creating a different dimension/space in time through miniatures, I decided to take a place familiar to me and manipulate it into a completely new world. I thought it'd be interesting to follow an idea rather different from my initial one but still following the same ties of the theme of manipulation in time. I wanted an excuse to go out and adventure to find new locations so i opted for a live-action. When researching for miniatures, Labyrinth was my main inspiration and i think that stays true for this idea, as the stairs scene is all about being caught within an unidentifiable moment in time. My idea was to have a character entering frame in one space and exiting into another- one completely juxtaposing the previous. This would create the illusion that she has no power over where she travels and is stuck in an endless loop of different spaces in time. A similar concept to our protagonists' situation in the film 'Labyrinth'. I would do this through use of continuity and transitions to create the sense that a character is travelling through different dimensions. I wanted to use Farnham and the areas surrounding it as it's a very naturally reserved and particular town so, making it seem almost alien and otherworldly was going to be a challenge and excited me. I knew that a lot of the magic was going to have to take place in post-production so now i needed to focus on what shots were needed to create the illusion of someone passing through different spaces.

My main inspiration for this video was Radiohead's music video for their song 'Daydreaming'. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the video follows Thom Yorke walking in a dreamlike state through a series of doors, seemingly lost, sad and looking for a place to rest. I loved the effect that this loop of restlessness had on the video and the endless world it created. The idea of walking through one door and appearing through another door in a completely different space and time is fascinating. Being able to create an illusive world simply through continuity and simple transitions makes this process even more appealing and accessible, hence why i wanted to give it a go.
Although an obvious choice, this idea of being able to travel into a different concept of time or space through a door makes me think of 'The Chronicles of Narnia'.
The idea of leaving a place as normal and familiar to you as your bedroom and then entering a magical forest through a wardrobe is such a powerful illusion. It also had kids of that era truly believing that their wardrobe could transport them to this new world. This kind of imagination is something i wanted to evoke through my film and feel like i have. I definitely still want to develop this idea further however, and create an even more unfamiliar space in time.
